This portlet can be used to format and display contents of any RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) feed in your portal. RSS feeds providing information such as news, weather, blogs etc. are widely available in the World Wide Web. The content of the feed is sent as XML. It is a good practice to make sure the RSS feed is delivered from a well known site. In rare cases an RSS feed may contain code which makes your web browser to hang or have unexpected behavior. In such a situation just start your browser and enter the following to get to the configuration screen, where you can remove the RSS Reader portlet from your portal:
http://<MyWebServer>/<MyApplication>/Default.page?CUSTOMIZE=Y.
Exchange the <MyWebServer> and <MyApplication> for the appropriate values. (If you don't know the web server or the application, ask your system administrator for help).
No setup is required before you use this portlet for the first time, except your personal customizations (see below)
This portlet displays the formatted contents of the feed.
Using the Customize page, you can provide the required settings for your portlet.
The following settings are available in this portlet:
Portlet title: The title of the portlet which can be given as your preference.
RSS Feed URL: The URL which sends out the RSS feed. Web sites that provide feeds may display icons such as or or which links to the feed. You can obtain the feed URL by right clicking on the icon and selecting "Copy shortcut" menu item in Internet Explorer or "Copy Link Location" menu item in Netscape. Alternatively you can click the icon and then copy the URL from the browser's address bar.
Number of items to display: The feed may contain many number of items. You can set the maximum number of items to show in the portlet using this setting.
Show channel title : Select this check box if you want the RSS channel's title which is part of the feed to be displayed at the beginning of the portlet.
Show channel header image: Select this check box if you want the RSS channels header image to be displayed in the portlet. Note: Some RSS channels may not contain a header image.
Show details of each item: A feed contains links back to each item on the original website as well as a short description of each item. Select this checkbox if you want the portlet to display short descriptions of each item in addition to the linked titles.
Show shaded background: Select this checkbox if you want the background color of the rows containing each item to alternate between shaded and non shaded. This makes it easy to distinguish between each item of the feed especially when there are many items.
Update when minimized: When this check box is selected the portlet's contents will be loaded even when the portlet is minimized. Uncheck this if the contents in the portlet takes a long time to load, then the portlet's contents will be loaded only when it is maximized.
