Handling Tools On Shop Orders—Extended Exercises

IMPORTANT
It is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity. If you work within any other site, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students. Predictable exercise results require that your data be isolated in your own site.

Basic Data Setup

Discrete Manufacturing Overview Racing Engine

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create the required data that will be used in the Discrete Manufacturing exercises. This sets up data for your site that only needs to be done once for Discrete Manufacturing course exercises.

  1. Set up your site for discrete manufacturing of racing engines.

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to view, create, remove and modify tools on a shop order.

The oil pan for the racing engine is a manufactured part that is produced from sheet steel with a by-product of scrap steel. A die and jig are used. You want to do the following:

Using Tools on a Shop Order

You want to create a shop order for 20 oil pans and the standard by-product of scrap steel, view the tool guidelines, add a note on the usage of the jig, and add the use of another tool.

  1. Open the Shop Order window and create a new shop order on your site for the 21-313 (Oil Pan) part with a lot size of 20. Save the information.
  2. Click the Operation Tools tab and verify that records exist for the 7-001 (Oil Pan Die) and 8-001 (Oil Pan Jig) tools, which are used on operation 10.
  3. Select the row for the 7-001 (Oil Pan Die) tool, right-click on the row, and then click Tool Guideline.
  4. When the Manufacturing Tool window displays, verify that the guidelines for the tool are shown in the Tool Guideline tab. Close the Manufacturing Tool window.
  5. In the table on the Operation Tools tab, enter a note about the usage of the jig in the Note Text field in the row for the 8-001 (Oil Pan Jig) tool.
  6. Create a new row in the table and verify that the value in the Tool Quantity field defaults to 1. Enter 10 in the Operation No field or select the appropriate value from the List of Values. Enter 9-001 (for the Torque Wrench) in the Tool ID field or select the appropriate value from the List of Values. Finally, enter a note about the usage of the torque wrench in the Note Text field. Save the information.

Note: The Discrete Manufacturing course will not use this shop order after this exercise, so you may further process the shop order if desired.
